During the week of June 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
During the week of June 13-19, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Kona, eight.
• Puna, four.
• South Hilo, three.
• Hamakua, one.
So far this year, there have been 520 DUI arrests compared to 469 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.
There have been 674 major accidents so far this year compared to 715 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been 10 official fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 11 official fatalities, compared to 10 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 15.4 percent for official traffic fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
